Modern languages
I teach English, Dutch, and German (as a foreign language) on a regular basis. Starting this fall, I will be teaching an advanced level French course for the VHS Vaterstetten (Reading Maigret). I sometimes tutor Italian.
In all of my classes, I speak in the target language practically all the time. My job is to offer the student the language in such a way that she or he understands it. I rarely worry about grammar, though I will address it in straightforward ways (avoiding terminology as much as possible) if there is a need. I am very much aware how stressful it is for students to have to speak in the new language before they are ready to do so. The first thing I tell students is that I will speak the target language, they can if they want to, but they don’t have to. This works very well and it’s lovely to see what happens when students start to speak – when they are comfortable!
